Well, over the years quite a few great bands have come through the station... and many/most of them were interviewed on-air. I was wondering if you guys could share some of your experiences and tell us who YOU interviewed.

I'll start. I only interviewed one and a half bands... the first was "The Last Roundup" or something like that, a country band from NYC. They were originally a punk band but had a change of heart and literally changed their tune. I'm not into country, but they were really good - the punk influence - and everyone had a great time (they played at the Chimes that night). I remember this interview took place when the station was still in the Stadium.

The only other interview I've ever been a part of was also a live performance. It was in 1988, I think, at the new facility in Hodges. There was a band, can't remember who (for some reason I'm thinking that "Zombies" was in the name of the band) but I do remember a stand-up bass. They were a great interview as well, and played three or four songs on the air live. Wish I had a tape of it, that was the best part!

A lot of local bands for Saturated Neighborhood (Dash Rip Rock, Cowboy Mouth, The Iguanas, Lump, and BR bands such as Becky Sharp, Meantree, Thoughts of Mary, Jot, and I'm several more). Most of them did a little performance in the studio, which was always cool.

I guess the Interview I'm happiest I was able to do was with with Austin's late-great Rievers (formerly Zeitgeist), and it was my first one. I came in to help at the last minute b/c the sitting DJ really didn't know much about them.

Interviewed rockabilly/punk/comedy trio the New Duncan Imperials two or three times.

Interviewed Austin's Duckhills once... MAN, they did some great shows with David Garza in the early 1990s!

Did a remote interview on the fly with Mike Watt, but it was really brief.

Remember a cool interview I taped (and still have) that my friend Lizette did with Poi Dog Pondering. Syd sang "Million Miles" (her song, not the Plimsouls' song) and also "sang" an article from the paper with Poi Dog providing backing music.

I think I was in the studio once (I know, big whoop) when Flaming Lips were being interviewed!

Billy Bragg once signed the $20 “Capitalism is killing music” T-shirt I bought after his show at the Varsity by writing “Irony, Mate!”

Got to interview some bigger names for my zine later: Man or Astroman?, Poster Children, Jawbox, Archers of Loaf...

I'm sure there were a couple more, but that's all I can remember right now.

Wish I'd gone to their show, but I blew it off. Pity.

Hrm, which bands did I interview at KLSU? I remember sitting in on an interview with Mike Watt that Rob Cambre did, and remember watching an interview of The Information Society (har) that was hilarious because some Chimes St. skinheads kept calling in and threatening to beat them up.

I also remember two interviews which didn't happen: Henry Rollins and Rob Halford (Judas Priest was playing the Centroplex and their label rep asked me to interview him; he never called).

I think I did my best interviews at WTUL, actually: Crash Worship, Jim Foetus (got that one on tape!), The Jesus Lizard, others.

Barely remember any of the interviews I did, but one that stands out was Beat Farmers ("Country Dick" died a few years back, on stage no less)...

will have to access the memory banks for more, I am sure I did a few since fridays were big nights for music.... the mind is the first thing to go I hear....

I actually remember your Crash Worship interview - ho boy, what an opportunity... and I have a tape of Rob's interview with Mike Watt... somewhere.

Thanks for refreshing my memory, "Swamp Zombies". Duh. I didn't interview them, but it was during my show so I ran the board while they played. Now that I think of it, that was the only time I've ever ran a board for ANY band.

Gene - are you doing any shows these days? I've been off the air since 1998 (did the last show at WTUL right after foot surgery, on percodan for a week, that was interesting) and I am just starting to miss it a little bit, now that Logan is old enough to appreciate it. I'll send you an E-mail about that sometime.

Nope, but I'm starting to get the itch. I've met two guys here in town who do shows at local universities, and they're both old vinyl collectors like me, so I just need to get off my butt, call the stations, and get something going.

Oh yeah, that Crash Worship interview was a real hoot. Two members showed up, a scantily-clad woman (OK Barry, relax) and some weirdo guy who wouldn't utter a word, only make noise with a little portable cassette recorder. My Journalism classes really paid off for that interview, har.

I'm getting ready to part with some of my vinyl - there might be a few things in there you'll want (although I'm keeping all my Ka-Spel items) so I'll probably contact you about it soon. (I know you want those Dan Fogelberg albums, right?

Do you have that Crash Worship interview on tape? (That was at TUL, right??) If I remember, that was from around 1993 or 1994...

PS Get off your butt and call the stations! If you're at one that webcasts, you'll have to let us know.

I am interested in re-broadcasting at least parts of these interviews if any of them survived the time. It would be nice to incorporate it when I play old stuff.

Nope, don't have the Crash Worship interview on tape. I didn't tape much of my WTUL airtime. I do have a pile of cassettes from my KLSU days -- I think I taped most of my last-semester shows.

I should rig up a cassette deck and relive the old days. I hope the tapes haven't deteriorated.

And yeah, keep me posted on your vinyl sale. I'm currently building a turntable dedicated for mono LPs -- so yeah, I'm interested in vinyl .

I know how you feel... I'm currently starting to transfer all our old shows (and eventually the concerts) from cassette to CD. If I'm industrious enough, I might also make MP3 copies for whatever.

The Reverand Horton Heat, great story about some guy in the crowd heckeling him and not into the concert, so he took his cigarrette and flicked it at him, and it landed in the guys drink...about a 30 foot shot...

If you ever do get round to making mp3s, please let me know as I have only about 3 tapes from 1996/1997, mainly poor quality, but enough to relive my youth....and would jump at the chance to get some more.
