Well, since I just wrote up that bit about G&S I thought I'd bring up another one from my early days at LSU.

When I first started grad school at LSU (1985) I had a car, and drove around BR a lot. I knew about the "New Jew" (why did they call it that anyway?) by campus, and someone told me that there was one on Florida Blvd. I used to go to both of them a lot, for computer games and records. Many of us remember Jim Bradford, who worked at the Bayou - but before that, I still remember him with a tie at New Generation on Highland, right behind the Deaf Valley Shell (which is now a Blockbuster Video).

New Generation stocked a lot of good records. The one on Florida had an amazing sale - there were two bins full of used records, but were LPs played in the store and sold for 50 cents. I remember, these records had two round punch holes in the upper right. I bought a massive load of these - many of them were imports... I got the import version of XTC's English Settlement (the import version had TWO LPs instead of one, about 70% more music)... and about 60 or 70 other records too. All great stuff. This was fall 1985. It seems to me that someone at KLSU worked there - was it Andy Schell? JT? Scott, did you work there? Someone did, but I wasn't at the station yet so I didn't make the connection very well.

The New Generation near campus had a nice upstairs area with a great vinyl selection. I remember seeing a rare Genesis P-Orridge LP there, many of the Psychic TV live albums (black border with red square, if you PTV then you know what I'm talking about), and lots of other rare and import things. I spent a ridiculous amount of time up there too, and ran up my very first credit card at New Gen! I'm probably still feeling the residual effects of that debt, 23 years later...

Anyway, what happened to New Gen? I know they closed up when I was in school there (1985-9), but miss them.

Just curious.

wow this brings back memories. Actually I ran Service and Shipping&Recieving Depts at the Florida location - started there in early 1979 after getting out of the service. I only stayed a little longer than a year - if you knew Joe, that is self explanatory on why - before moving on to greener pastures.

This is where I met Alan (Alien) Rowell. Alan worked in record department and then MLM - New Gens marketing arm. He can give his side of the story, if you can get him back on line.

So how did Alan and myself finally get to KLSU? We were partaking of some, well I have said enough, at the greek theater (we both had apartments on Ivanhoe - Off State St.) - anyways I digress, we were listners of KLSU and were discussing the station, and decided "we can do this"

More to come.......

"The service"?? You were in the service?? Which branch? I didn't know that - wow. Heh, I never considered it - but work (as a civilian of course) with the air force occasionally (haven't in 7 years though).

One thing - Jenni told me that it was Andy Schell who worked at the Fla location of "New Jew". I vaguely remember that now, it's only been what - 23 years? I remember that I'd go into the store and he'd tell me about KLSU... I did try to get a show that fall ('85) but they only wanted to give me a 3-6 am slot, and with two years experience at WTUL I thought I was too good for that. Feh, I wound up paying my dues anyway at KLSU and glad I did.

Look forward to reading part 2 of your post. I'm getting ready to download your shows - it's been ages since I've heard you on the air, Spawn. :) Thanks for doing that too!
