Other than Great Format Change Apologist Stevie Ray is anyone else on this board that was down in the Hodges basement in the early 90s? Heady times indeed. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration. Still, it was fun.

Ok, that's an exaggeration too.

Apologist? Quite the opposite, you ignorant lawyer! Just kidding......

James, I do recall listening to your pithy diatribes as you attempted to play jazz during that morning show. Ah, the sound of Slaton before his first cup of coffee is certainly reward in an of itself.....

Once again, NO APOLOGIES FOR THE 1990s....except of course, for James' hair choices.

I remember you -- the dead ringer for the obnoxious brother on Wings. Glad that show was cancelled.

Post subject:  Ah yes

As I remember you. A pasty Adam Goldberg who brewed his own beer, but threw excellent Halloween parties...

Beer...is that what you were brewing? I could never tell!

And Steve, everyone knows you were the DJ on Northern Exposure. Didn't you marry some greek chick?

I didn't post on this board to talk to you tool boxes.

You're just disappointed we're the only ones who will talk to you...too bad Sonny Devillier and Jack Hamilton don't read this board, I'm sure they'd have nice things to say to you.

James, I'll talk to you, as I'm apparently one of those elitist snobs that didn't want Stevie Ray in my little club.

Oh, Jenni, you probably would have hired me if I hadn't been wearing that Rick Astley t-shirt when I showed up that first day. :)

Jenni, I appreciate it, but in the name of fairness I should point out that I tend to agree with Stevie's sentiments if not his vitriolic delivery. I'm not sure how "elite" KLSU's staffing was, but it's programming -- if it can be called that -- was not accessible to the majority of the student body. Granted, no one wants a college radio station programming Top 40, but neither do we need programming to be dictated solely by the whims of disaffected stoners who think Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is a great Drive Time album.

And, Stevie, it wasn't your Rick Astley t-shirt that was disturbing so much as it was your homoerotic Rick Astley "fan fiction."

Well, that is an unfair generalization. Especially considering that the announcers had requirements that they had to meet, and would also often get critiqued if they played something that that was innappropriately day-parted. It is also unfair to generalize about the DJs... again, we came from all walks, and many of us didn't do drugs. I for one, didn't even drink that much. Besides, most of the DJs played quite appropriate and very thought-provoking music.

Sorry, Jenni, I have to generalize because I'm telling you my general impression of the station at that time. I don't have the memory or the time to specifically critique each DJ that was on the air then. I know that some were quite good, but overall I thought the station had an uneven, unprofessional and often unlistenable sound.

The "stoner" comment was just humor, by the way. The disaffected comment was not. KLSU, like so many college radio stations, perpetually had that classic college radio sound that I once heard summed up as "dead air ... um .. dead air." (Not nearly as bad as KTUL, though.)

Jenni, this is nothing personal. Honestly, it was all a long time ago and it doesn't really matter anymore. There are two schools of thought on what a college radio should sound like -- more experimental or more mainstream. I'm in the more mainstream camp. You sound like you're in the more experimental camp. I'm in favor of accessibility by the student body who are paying the station's fees. I'm guessing you're in favor of exposing those who are listening to something different so that the fees do what some feel they're supposed to do -- educate. These differences have roots far deeper than whether you prefer Jello Biafra over the Godfathers. They are fundamental political differences that we're seeing played out right now in our country between the so-called Red and Blue States. Do you want rule by the ignorant majority or the enlightened minority?

Long and short of it is that I don't think it's likely we'll change each other's minds on a KLSU message board.

Scott! You don't like all this new activity on your board? ;)

Okay, I've already had my say so I'm done arguing!

Now let's get someone to reply to my thread from several months ago, "Who did YOU interview during your time at KLSU?"
