don't know if any of you knew randy when he was in BR in the late 70's-early 80's

he was in the jazz program at SU--but already on a path--he toured w/billy cobham when he was 19

he used to play with betsy braud who worked at the landing with me--he was a great guy back then and seems pretty much the same these days

betsy is still in BR and still playing i believe

I used to be a busboy at Poet's on College Drive, early in the fern-bar craze in the late '70s, and Randy played there all the time. He was nothing but nice, polite, and encouraging to a geeky young musician who peppered him constantly with questions, (namely, me).

Another great bassist from Baton Rouge from that era was Brad Cobb, who now owns a studio in LA.

And what about Gregg Wright? Remember him? I have vague fond memories of getting wasted on brandy and amaretto (barf) at his apartment in Los Angeles with Beau Bahan in the early '80s on a road trip to the US Festival.
And many free concerts at the Greek Theater with the Jeff Pollard Band, later to become LeRoux.

Don't get me started.......

nonono get started Dave, I need the memory jolting.

I didn't realize Randy was from BR at all.

I did meet him about 3 years ago at a recording session that I was working and he stopped by...he was mr. affable - so pleasant and nice...(btw - the session I was working on, was for Billy Idol, which now that I think about it, should be it's own posting...guess it qualifies as "brush with greatness"...it's easy to forget these things where you live in a place where you see Ice T at the dry cleaners and John Boy Walton in the potato chip isle at the grocery store).

This must be a sign of the apocalypse. I would've never imagined that a KLSU board would have a thread about American Idol people (let alone in a Brush With Greatness forum!!

I'm popping a Boards of Canada cd into the player just to rid my brain of Clay Aiken residue.

I got to work with Clay for a music video that is on the new Disney Aladdin DVD release. He sang live with a 100 piece soundtrack orchestra at the Newmann Scoring Stage (Stage 1, built in 1923) at the Fox Hollywood studios. I was the video engineer for the shoot in High Definition.

Composer Alan Menken was there to oversee the session.

Bruce Botnick engineered. He was the engineer for all the Doors sessions and has produced many recordings, including the "E.T" soundtrack with composer John Williams.

The sound was spectacular.
